Liverpool’s new No.9, Alexander Isak, has already made headlines with a cheeky remark that appeared to be aimed at former club Newcastle United during his first interview as a Red.
The Swedish striker completed a sensational £125 million Deadline Day move from Newcastle to Liverpool, setting a new British transfer record. The 25-year-old will take over the iconic No.9 shirt, previously worn by Darwin Núñez, who left for Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal last month.
Speaking for the first time as a Liverpool player, Isak expressed his excitement at joining the club and hinted at why he felt Anfield was the right step in his career.
“I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well,” he said.
When asked about his decision to leave Newcastle, Isak’s response suggested a subtle dig at the Magpies’ ambitions compared to Liverpool’s.
“I think it’s a mixture of what the club is building, but also what they’re building on top of—the history of the club. I want to win trophies, that’s ultimately the biggest motivation for me. I feel like this is a perfect place for me to grow and take my game to the next level,” he explained.
The forward’s comments on wanting to win trophies may sting for Newcastle fans, especially after Isak played a key role in helping the club lift the Carabao Cup last season, scoring the winner in the final against Liverpool at Wembley.
Isak also reflected on his past experiences at Anfield as an opponent:
“It’s very difficult playing at Anfield. I’ve had a little bit of success here, but not as a team. We lost both games, and the atmosphere is something extraordinary. I’m excited to be a part of that now.”
Isak is currently away on international duty with Sweden and could make his Liverpool debut against Burnley on September 14.
With Liverpool fans already buzzing about their record signing, the Swede’s ambition to “create history” at Anfield has set the tone for what promises to be an exciting chapter in his career.
