Alexander Isak has finally broken his silence following his stormy Deadline Day switch from Newcastle United to Liverpool, leaving behind a trail of controversy and mixed emotions among the Toon Army.
A Bitter Exit After a Summer of Tension
The Swedish striker’s transfer saga dominated the summer, with Isak refusing to join Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia and instead training with his former club Real Sociedad.
Frustration boiled over on August 19 when Isak accused Newcastle of breaking their promise to let him leave.
“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue,” Isak stated at the time, sparking anger among fans.
That public outburst led to hostile chants inside St James’ Park, while supporters’ groups openly voiced their disapproval. One influential Newcastle fan collective summed up the mood with just two words: “Good riddance.”
Isak’s Instagram Farewell: “Forever Grateful”
Despite the acrimonious departure, Isak reached out to Newcastle fans with a heartfelt Instagram message after completing his move to Liverpool. Posting a montage of his best moments in black and white, he wrote:
“I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together.
Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years.
Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.”
Advisor’s Sharp Words Add Fuel
While Isak tried to smooth things over, his advisor Vlado Lemić took a more pointed approach. Speaking to talkSPORT, Lemić remarked:
“It’s nice when you have someone to be with, but it is even nicer when you know who you will never be with again.”
That remark is unlikely to heal wounds in Tyneside anytime soon.
Support From Teammates
Inside the dressing room, Isak was not without allies. Fellow defender Sven Botman shared an emotional message on Instagram:
“What started off as teammates growed into one of my rare best friendships. No more words needed brother, all the best in your next chapter.”
Anthony Gordon also showed support, adding:
“Regardless of the situation & what’s gone on, it’s been a pleasure to play with you. One of the best chemistries I’ve had on the pitch and more importantly a great person and teammate.”
What’s Next?
Isak missed Liverpool’s trip to St James’ Park in late August due to his self-imposed exile, but the reunion is inevitable. Unless the clubs meet in a domestic cup, Newcastle fans won’t see him again until January at Anfield, where emotions will surely run high.
