Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is on the brink of being sacked after a disastrous start to the 2025/26 season, with reports from Fichajes claiming Zinedine Zidane is being lined up as his potential replacement.
United’s Struggles Under Amorim
Amorim’s reign at Old Trafford has been turbulent from the start. Since taking charge last year, the Portuguese coach has failed to steady the ship. United endured a nightmare 2024/25 campaign, finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League and missing out on silverware after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.
The new season has shown little sign of improvement. United opened their campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal before stumbling to a frustrating draw against Fulham.
The biggest blow came midweek, when League Two side Grimsby Town dumped the Red Devils out of the Carabao Cup on penalties, a result that has left Amorim on the verge of the sack.
Zidane on United’s Radar
According to Fichajes, Manchester United are expected to part ways with Amorim “imminently,” with the board already identifying Zinedine Zidane as their top target.
The French icon, who guided Real Madrid to three consecutive Champions League titles, has been out of management since leaving the Spanish giants.
However, his name continues to be linked with high-profile jobs across Europe. Former teammate Sergio Ramos once described Zidane as “unique,” and United believe he could be the man to revive their fortunes.
Make-or-Break for Amorim
United face Burnley this weekend before the international break, a fixture widely viewed as Amorim’s last chance to save his job. Should the Red Devils fail to secure three points against Scott Parker’s side, the 39-year-old could be dismissed before September.
Having backed Amorim heavily in the summer transfer window, the United hierarchy expect results immediately. Failure to deliver has left the Portuguese tactician with no room for excuses.
If Zidane does accept the challenge, it would mark his return to management and set the stage for one of the most intriguing Premier League storylines of the season.
