Andre Onana has sealed a season-long loan switch to Turkish giants Trabzonspor, temporarily bringing his Manchester United chapter to a pause.
The Cameroon international’s exit became inevitable after United snapped up young Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens on deadline day, effectively pushing Onana down the pecking order.
Just days later, the Red Devils confirmed the 29-year-old’s move to Türkiye, finalised ahead of the Turkish transfer window’s deadline on September 12.
According to The Athletic, the deal does not include a fee or a purchase option, meaning Onana will return to Old Trafford next summer unless circumstances change.
United marked the departure with a short farewell: “We would like to wish Andre good luck.”
From FA Cup Glory to Difficult Times
Onana leaves Manchester United after 102 appearances in all competitions. Despite a difficult 2024–25 campaign marred by costly mistakes and criticism, including a stinging remark from former United midfielder Nemanja Matić, who branded him “one of the worst goalkeepers in club history” in which the shot-stopper did enjoy memorable moments.
Most notably, he played a key role in United’s 2–1 FA Cup final win over rivals Manchester City in 2024, his biggest highlight since arriving from Inter Milan in 2023 for €51m (£43.9m, $57.4m).
However, under new manager Rúben Amorim, Onana quickly lost his starting spot this season to Altay Bayındır, only featuring in the shock Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.
A Fresh Start in Türkiye
Though his Old Trafford contract runs until 2028, Onana now embarks on a fresh adventure in the Turkish Süper Lig, where he’ll aim to rediscover his best form. Trabzonspor welcomed their new man with a bold message on X:
“A new adventure, a new challenge. Welcome to the world’s greatest city team, André Onana!”
