Anthony Joshua’s retirement plans have taken a surprising twist after promoter Eddie Hearn revealed the former heavyweight champion is set to continue his career longer than first expected.
Earlier this year, Hearn suggested Joshua would call it a day by the end of 2026. But with his comeback delayed due to injury, the Matchroom boss now believes the Watford-born star could fight into 2027.
Joshua, 35, has not fought since suffering a knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois in September 2024. Surgery on a lingering elbow issue kept him sidelined, but the two-time world champion is back in training and targeting a return to the ring in early 2026.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Hearn explained:
“I always said that 2026 would likely be his last year in the sport. But now, with the delayed comeback, it could probably go until 2027. If he was to get beaten in his next fight, that would probably be it, because that’s a fight he’s expected to win.”
Joshua’s next bout is being carefully selected, with January or February 2026 the most likely timeframe. A defeat at this stage could end hopes of the long-awaited all-British showdown with Tyson Fury, but victory could set up blockbuster clashes with Fury, Oleksandr Usyk, or a Dubois rematch.
Potential opponents include fellow Olympic gold medallist Tony Yoka, although talks are yet to begin. Surprisingly, YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul has also emerged as a serious option. According to reports, discussions between both camps have taken place, with 2026 looking likely for the matchup.
Whether against Yoka, Paul, or another rival, Joshua’s comeback will be one of the most highly anticipated returns in boxing – and could define whether his career truly extends into 2027.
