Barcelona have officially parted ways with midfielder Oriol Romeu, terminating his contract as the club continues to battle La Liga’s strict financial fair play (FFP) regulations.
Romeu, who rejoined the Catalan giants in 2023 after starting his career at La Masia in 2010, made 39 appearances across all competitions, including 29 in La Liga. However, his return has now come to an abrupt end, with Barcelona prioritising squad registration flexibility.
According to reports from COPE, the decision comes as Barça attempt to register Wojciech Szczesny, Gerard Martin and Roony Bardghji before the transfer deadline. The club has also faced difficulties registering marquee summer arrivals Marcus Rashford and Joan Garcia, due to the league’s notorious “1:1 rule,” which restricts spending to match revenues.
Despite these financial challenges, Hansi Flick’s Barcelona have enjoyed a strong start to the 2025/26 La Liga season, remaining unbeaten after victories over Mallorca and Levante and a draw against Rayo Vallecano.
The Blaugrana will welcome Valencia to the Camp Nou on September 14 in their first home fixture of the campaign, before beginning their Champions League campaign away at Newcastle United on September 18.
