Manchester United have made Premier League history with a bizarre own goal record after finally securing their first win of the 2025/26 season in a dramatic 3-2 victory over newly promoted Burnley.
United’s Strange Start
The Red Devils opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark in unusual fashion, as Burnley midfielder Josh Cullen deflected the ball into his own net. Mason Mount’s looping cross struck the crossbar before ricocheting off Cullen’s chest and bouncing into the goal.
Remarkably, it was the second straight game that United’s first goal of the season came via an opponent’s mistake. In their previous match against Fulham, Leny Yoro’s header had struck Rodrigo Muniz and gone in for another freak own goal.
A Premier League First
That sequence means Manchester United are now the first club in Premier League history to have their opening two goals of a new season scored through own goals.
How the Game Unfolded
Despite Burnley twice clawing their way back into the contest, United eventually sealed the three points. Bryan Mbeumo restored their lead in the second half before Bruno Fernandes converted a late penalty to make it 3-2 and secure a vital victory for Ruben Amorim’s side.
What’s Next for Manchester United?
With their first win now under their belt, United will hope this result sparks momentum heading into the international break. They next face arch-rivals Manchester City on September 14 in what promises to be an early test of their top-four credentials.
