The Los Angeles Chargers are making roster moves after a major defensive setback.
Star pass rusher Khalil Mack suffered a dislocated elbow in Monday’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders and has been placed on injured reserve. While head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed the 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year will return this season, Mack will miss at least four weeks.
To fill the void, the Chargers are signing former top-five draft pick Clelin Ferrell, per insider Jordan Schultz. The defensive end spent last season with the Washington Commanders, recording 3.5 sacks.
In a twist of irony, Ferrell was the first player the Raiders drafted after trading Mack to the Chicago Bears in 2018. Now, years later, he’s stepping in as Mack’s replacement in Los Angeles.
Though Ferrell never quite lived up to his billing as the No. 4 overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, he now gets another chance to revive his career with his fourth team after stints with the Raiders, 49ers, and Commanders.
Alongside Ferrell, the Chargers are also adding former Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans defensive end Rashad Weaver, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
With Mack sidelined, Los Angeles is betting on depth and untapped potential to keep its pass rush alive in a crucial stretch of the season.
