Chelsea have reached an agreement with Manchester United to sign highly-rated winger Alejandro Garnacho in a deal worth £40 million.
The transfer includes a 10 per cent sell-on clause, making it one of the most significant player sales in United’s modern history.
The deal represents United’s fourth-largest sale ever, following those of Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Angel Di Maria. It also marks the biggest transfer fee ever received for an academy graduate at Old Trafford.
Negotiations between the two clubs saw United push Chelsea’s initial £25m bid up to £40m after rejecting multiple lower offers. Although United had originally valued Garnacho at £50m, both sides found a compromise that suits all parties.
United believe the sale is a pragmatic move, securing their largest transfer fee in five years, while also granting the player his wish to move on.
Garnacho Wanted Chelsea Move
Despite interest from other European clubs, Garnacho made it clear he only wanted a switch to Stamford Bridge. He reportedly turned down alternative offers to pursue the move and has not been training with new United boss Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad since being told he could leave at the end of last season.
Amorim: “Sometimes Things Don’t Work Out”
Speaking earlier in the summer, Amorim admitted Garnacho’s time at Old Trafford had run its course despite his obvious talent:
“You can understand and you can see he’s a really talented boy, and sometimes things don’t work out. I think it’s clear Garnacho wants something different with different leadership, and I can understand that. Sometimes you adapt, sometimes you don’t—it’s football.”
The Argentine winger departs Manchester United with the club’s best wishes and is now set to begin a new chapter in the Premier League with Chelsea.
