Manchester United are weighing up their options in the transfer market as Aston Villa’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has re-emerged as a potential target. Talks have also included the possibility of Jadon Sancho moving to Villa Park in a surprise switch.

United are currently debating whether to pursue Martinez or Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens, with time running out before Monday’s transfer deadline.

The need for a goalkeeper has intensified following Altay Bayindir’s shaky display against Burnley and a string of errors from Andre Onana earlier this week against Grimsby.

Lammens vs Martinez: United’s Goalkeeper Dilemma

  • Senne Lammens (23) – United have been in negotiations with Antwerp but are yet to agree on a fee, with the Belgian side demanding around €25 million. Lammens is seen as a long-term project, with only one full season of senior football but strong shot-stopping credentials.
  • Emiliano Martinez (32), At the other end of the spectrum, Martinez offers elite experience, having helped Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His desire to leave Aston Villa is no secret, and United have been in contact with his camp since January. Villa, meanwhile, are preparing for the possibility of Martinez’s departure and have identified Diogo Costa of Porto as a potential replacement.

Sancho Swap on the Table?

Interestingly, the discussions have also raised the idea of Jadon Sancho moving to Aston Villa as part of negotiations. While no concrete agreement has been reached, such a deal could help smooth Martinez’s move to Old Trafford.

United manager Ruben Amorim admitted over the weekend:

“It is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment.”

With the transfer deadline looming, United face a crucial decision: pursue the youthful promise of Lammens or bank on the proven pedigree of Martinez
