Enzo Fernandez has been a cornerstone of Chelsea’s midfield since arriving from Benfica for a then-British record fee of £107m just over 950 days ago.
His influence has been undeniable, but the way it manifests on the pitch has constantly evolved.
Signed shortly after helping Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar 2022, Fernandez arrived at Stamford Bridge as a 21-year-old deep-lying playmaker with maturity well beyond his years. His composure, passing range, and ability to dictate tempo made him an instant asset for the Blues.
Under current head coach Enzo Maresca, the 24-year-old has added new dimensions to his game. No longer just Chelsea’s metronome, Fernandez has become a genuine attacking force. “Enzo has improved a lot in all aspects,” Maresca said. “In terms of leadership, in terms of numbers, he’s one of the highest in the Premier League for goals and assists.”
The stats prove it. In his first half-season in 2023, Fernandez registered only two assists and no goals. His first full campaign yielded six goal contributions, which jumped to 13 the following season. This year, he already has two goals and an assist in just three Premier League games.
With Cole Palmer doubtful for Chelsea’s trip to Brentford, Maresca hinted at pushing Fernandez further forward into the No.10 role. “Enzo can play there,” he noted, while also mentioning new loan signing Facundo Buonanotte as another option.
Still, given his current form and growing influence, Fernandez looks the most likely candidate to step up. Whether operating as a No.8 or a No.10, his importance to Chelsea continues to grow in making him one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders.
