Marcus Rashford reignited his Champions League career in spectacular fashion as Barcelona edged past Newcastle 2-1 at St James’ Park.

The England international, currently on loan from Manchester United, struck twice in nine minutes to silence the home crowd and remind fans of his elite quality on the European stage.

Rashford, who endured a difficult spell at Old Trafford before moving on loan to Aston Villa last season, showcased his talent once again under Barca boss Hansi Flick. A powerful header followed by a superb long-range strike gave the 27-year-old his first Champions League goals in nearly four years.

After the match, Rashford expressed his desire to remain at Barcelona long-term, stating he hopes to “stay for as many [seasons] as possible.”

Gordon Impressed by Barca’s Midfield

Despite scoring his maiden Champions League goal late on, Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon chose to praise Barcelona’s dominance in midfield. Speaking to TNT Sports, Gordon said:

“Pedri and Frenkie de Jong were fantastic. They made it really difficult for us to do our usual press, and they controlled the game.”

In a separate interview with beIN Sports, Gordon admitted:

“They were the best I’ve played against in that sense. We’ve faced top sides like City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, but the way Barca moved the ball in midfield made pressing almost impossible.”

He also acknowledged Rashford’s decisive impact, adding:

“It’s a top level. Rashford scored two goals out of nowhere. For us, it’s about taking chances when they come.”

Missed Chances Cost Newcastle

Eddie Howe’s side created opportunities in the first half, with Harvey Barnes spurning key chances that could have shifted momentum. Gordon’s late strike offered hope, but Barcelona’s ruthless finishing and control of crucial phases ultimately secured the win.
