Jose Mourinho is on the verge of making a sensational return to Benfica, just hours after Bruno Lage was dismissed following a shock defeat to Qarabag FK.
The Portuguese tactician, recently sacked by Fenerbahce, has spoken out about Lage’s comments and revealed his excitement at the prospect of leading the Eagles once again.
Mourinho in Lisbon to Finalise Benfica Deal
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Mourinho landed at Lisbon’s Tires Aerodrome on Wednesday to wrap up talks with Benfica. Reports suggest the former Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan boss has already verbally agreed to a two-year deal until 2027. If confirmed, Mourinho could be on the touchline for Benfica’s upcoming league clash with AVS this Saturday.
Lage’s Farewell Message to Mourinho
After his sacking, Lage addressed reporters with a parting message for his successor:
“I wish the best of luck to the man who comes next. I don’t know if it’s Mr. Mourinho or not. What matters is that it’s someone who knows Benfica very well.”
Lage also highlighted the quality of the squad, praising new arrivals Heorhiy Sudakov and Dodi Lukebakio.
Mourinho: ‘I Didn’t Think Twice’
Speaking to media upon his arrival in Lisbon, Mourinho confirmed his eagerness to take charge of the club where he briefly managed in 2000:
“When I was faced with the possibility of coaching Benfica, I didn’t think twice — I’m interested.”
The “Special One” also offered words of empathy for his predecessor:
“He needs to do what we all do — grieve. I don’t think there’s a coach who doesn’t leave frustrated. I look at him with immense respect and solidarity, because I went through the same thing not long ago.”
A Twist of Fate
Ironically, Mourinho was dismissed by Fenerbahce just three weeks ago after losing a Champions League playoff to Benfica which is the very club he is now set to manage.
With a deal close to completion, Benfica fans could see Mourinho back in charge in less than 48 hours, marking a dramatic new chapter in both his career and the Eagles’ season.
