Liverpool have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign striker Alexander Isak in a Premier League record transfer worth £125 million.
The deal, which rises to £130m with solidarity payments, surpasses Chelsea’s £106m signing of Enzo Fernández in January 2023. It also eclipses Liverpool’s own club-record summer move for Florian Wirtz, which totalled £116m.
Isak, 25, is set to undergo a medical on Monday before completing a six-year contract at Anfield.
Newcastle U-Turn on Isak Sale
Despite insisting throughout the summer that the Sweden international was not for sale, Newcastle have accepted Liverpool’s record-breaking offer. Sources suggest the Magpies had already been preparing for his departure in recent days.
On Saturday, Newcastle signed Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade in a club-record €75m transfer and remain in the market for another forward, having seen multiple bids for Wolves’ Jørgen Strand Larsen rejected.
Transfer Saga Reaches Its End
The Athletic first revealed in July that Isak wanted to leave Newcastle. He skipped pre-season matches, trained away from the squad, and released a statement on August 19 declaring his relationship with the club “can’t continue.”
Board-level talks with Newcastle’s hierarchy and Saudi Arabia’s PIF representatives followed, but Eddie Howe later admitted he wanted “clarity” on the striker’s future.
Isak enjoyed a standout 2023/24 campaign, scoring 27 goals in 42 games — finishing only behind Mohamed Salah in the Premier League scoring charts.
Liverpool’s Big Summer Spending
The signing of Isak takes Liverpool’s summer outlay to more than £250m. The reigning champions have already secured the arrivals of Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giovanni Leoni.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have opened their title defence with three straight wins — a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth, a dramatic 3-2 comeback against Newcastle, and Sunday’s 1-0 win over Arsenal.
With Isak now joining their attack, Liverpool have added yet another world-class goalscorer to boost their chances of defending the Premier League crown.
