Luis Suarez has issued a public apology following the ugly scenes that broke out after Inter Miami’s 3–0 defeat to Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup Final.

The Uruguayan striker admitted his behavior was “a mistake” after being accused of spitting at a Sounders staff member during the heated scuffle.

The loss itself was a heavy blow for Miami, but the post-match brawl quickly stole the headlines. Multiple players were seen pushing and throwing punches, with Suarez’s actions drawing the most scrutiny from fans and media alike.

Taking to Instagram, Suarez congratulated Seattle on their victory before expressing remorse:

“It was a moment full of tension and frustration, when things took place at the end of the game that shouldn’t have occurred, but that doesn’t justify my reaction. I made a mistake and I’m sincerely sorry.”

He added that the incident was not the image he wanted to show his family or his club, while promising to focus on Inter Miami’s goals for the remainder of the season.

Inter Miami also released a statement condemning the brawl, stressing that the altercation “does not reflect the values of our sport” and confirming the club is working with both MLS and Leagues Cup officials on next steps.

So far, no suspensions or fines have been announced. However, MLS has a history of issuing bans for spitting incidents and misconduct tied to Leagues Cup matches.

For example, Hector Herrera once received a three-match ban for spitting at a referee, while Cristian Arango was suspended for four matches in 2024 for violating the league’s anti-harassment policy.

With Suarez’s case now in the spotlight, both MLS and Leagues Cup organizers will be under pressure to make a ruling before Inter Miami return to action on September 13 against Charlotte FC, followed by a rematch with Seattle Sounders just days later.
