Liverpool’s deadline day move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has dramatically collapsed, according to reports from journalist Rahman Osman and The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
The Reds were on the brink of sealing a £35 million deal for the England international, which included a 10% sell-on clause. Guehi even underwent a medical in London ahead of what looked set to be a blockbuster move to Anfield.
However, the deal hit a major roadblock after Palace failed to secure a replacement. The Eagles had been targeting Brighton centre-back Igor on a season-long loan, but that transfer also collapsed at the last minute.
With no defensive reinforcements incoming, Palace manager Oliver Glasner stepped in to halt Guehi’s departure. Ornstein revealed that Guehi held talks with Glasner, who was reluctant to sanction the move without cover at the back.
Osman now reports the decision is final: Guehi will stay at Selhurst Park, with Glasner making it “clear as day” that the centre-back is too important to lose.
The 24-year-old, who has just one year left on his Palace contract, had appeared set to join Jurgen Klopp’s side in a late swoop that would have strengthened Liverpool’s defensive ranks. Instead, Guehi remains in south London as Palace aim to steady their season.
