Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson has been left furious after his loan move to Bayern Munich collapsed at the last minute due to Liam Delap’s hamstring injury.
Jackson had already travelled to Germany and was preparing to undergo his medical in Munich on Saturday when Chelsea abruptly pulled the plug on the deal.
According to reports, the decision was made by club officials while Jackson was still on board a private jet with his representatives, leaving the 23-year-old frustrated and reluctant to return to London.
The proposed deal would have seen Bayern pay €15 million (£12.9m) for a season-long loan, with an option to make the move permanent next summer for €65m (£56.2m) plus a sell-on clause.
However, with Delap limping off in the 15th minute of Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League win over Fulham, manager Enzo Maresca admitted the striker could now be sidelined for up to eight weeks.
That injury blow forced Chelsea to rethink their plans, leaving Jackson with no option but to stay at Stamford Bridge. Had he left, Joao Pedro would have been the club’s only fit senior striker, especially after Christopher Nkunku’s permanent switch to AC Milan was confirmed earlier in the day.
Chelsea officials are believed to favour keeping Jackson rather than scrambling to sign a new striker before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Speaking after the Fulham match, Maresca appeared resigned to losing Delap for the coming weeks.
“Liam’s injury doesn’t look good. It was at full speed, hamstring — that usually means weeks,” the Chelsea boss admitted.
Jackson, who is understood to be unhappy with the situation, must now prepare for an unexpected return to Chelsea duty, while Bayern Munich are left frustrated in their search for a new forward.
