Nigeria have been dealt a huge blow ahead of their crunch 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa, with talisman Victor Osimhen officially ruled out of the encounter.
The Super Eagles’ star striker, currently leading the line for Turkish champions Galatasaray, limped off during Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo. Osimhen initially attempted to play through the pain but was forced off just before half-time with what has now been confirmed as a shin bruise.
Nigeria went on to secure all three points thanks to a second-half winner from debutant and Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare, keeping their qualification hopes alive in Group C. The victory left the Super Eagles third in the standings, trailing leaders South Africa and Benin.
Much of the post-match discussion focused on Osimhen’s condition, with head coach Eric Chelle admitting on Saturday night that he was unsure of the forward’s availability for the upcoming clash. Any hopes of a swift recovery have now been dashed, as Osimhen did not travel with the team to Bloemfontein on Sunday after waking up in pain.
Instead, the 26-year-old will return to Galatasaray for further assessment and treatment. The Turkish giants face Eyupspor in the Super Lig next weekend before beginning their Champions League campaign away to Eintracht Frankfurt on September 18.
In Osimhen’s absence, Cyriel Dessers, who replaced him against Rwanda, and match-winner Arokodare are expected to lead Nigeria’s attack against Bafana Bafana in what could prove a decisive fixture in Group C.
