Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted his post-match comments after the shock EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby Town were driven by raw emotion, insisting he remains fully committed to the club despite hinting at doubts about his future.

Following United’s 2-1 loss to the League Two side on Wednesday night, Amorim sparked speculation when he said his team looked “completely lost” and that “something has to change.” The remarks raised concerns inside Old Trafford, with some interpreting them as a sign the Portuguese coach was questioning his role.

However, speaking to the press on Friday, Amorim clarified his remarks:

“To be really honest, every time we lose a game like that I’m going to be emotional. Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love them. Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to stay here for 20 years.”

The 40-year-old admitted he must improve his composure after difficult results but stressed his focus is firmly on United’s next Premier League fixture against Burnley on Saturday.

Amorim reflected on the team’s mixed start to the season, saying:

“I felt we had a very good pre-season. We were playing better, showing consistency. But we played badly for 30 minutes against Fulham, and against Grimsby I was really disappointed with everything. Now it’s a new game, and we focus on that.”

Manchester United have taken just one point from their last two league matches – a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal followed by a 1-1 draw with Fulham – and will be looking to bounce back at Old Trafford when they host Burnley at 15:00 BST.
