South Africa maintained their grip on top spot in Group C of the World Cup qualifiers after holding Nigeria to a tense 1-1 draw at the Toyota Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Super Eagles fought back after an early setback, but both sides were forced to settle for a share of the points in a high-intensity clash.
The game began on a sour note for Nigeria when defender Ola Aina limped off injured after just seven minutes, paving the way for Bright Osayi-Samuel. South Africa quickly took advantage of the disruption, controlling possession and pressing high.
Their breakthrough came in the 24th minute when Teboho Mokoena released Mohau Nkota, whose low cross was deflected into the net by Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong for an own goal.
Despite struggling to dominate midfield, Nigeria responded before the break. In the 42nd minute, Calvin Bassey powered home a header from Tom Dele-Bashiru’s pinpoint delivery to level matters at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The Super Eagles began the second half brightly, applying pressure on South Africa, but Hugo Broos’ side regained control as the game wore on. Injuries continued to play a role, with Zuko Mdunyelwa forced off in the 61st minute, replaced by Thabiso Monyane.
Fatigue hit Nigeria late in the game, but the Bafana Bafana couldn’t capitalise, and the draw keeps them top of Group C with 17 points, while Nigeria sit second with 11 points, just ahead of Benin on goal difference.
The electric atmosphere inside the Toyota Stadium also played its part, as thousands of fans turned out to back their teams on a lively Tuesday night.
