The Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx have made a bold front-office move, announcing Matthew Caldwell as their new Chief Executive Officer.

Caldwell, who has spent the past decade with the Florida Panthers, will step into his new role on September 2, 2025, under a 10-year contract.

Caldwell leaves behind his post as President of Business Operations with the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers, where he was instrumental in reshaping the franchise’s business model and off-ice success.

Big Move by Timberwolves’ New Owners

This hiring marks a significant step for Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, who officially took full control of the Timberwolves and Lynx earlier this summer.

Our vision is for the Timberwolves and Lynx to set a new standard of excellence in pro sports,” Lore and Rodriguez said in a joint statement. “Matthew’s proven track record with the Florida Panthers makes him the right leader to drive us into an innovative new era.”

Caldwell will oversee day-to-day business operations and strategic growth initiatives for the Timberwolves, Lynx, and G League affiliate Iowa Wolves.

Caldwell’s Journey: From Wall Street to the NBA Stage

A West Point graduate and former U.S. Army officer, Caldwell also holds MBA and law degrees from Northwestern University and previously worked on Wall Street with Goldman Sachs.

Since joining the Panthers in 2014 as COO and later becoming CEO in 2016, Caldwell played a pivotal role in securing:

  • A new long-term operating agreement with Broward County through 2033.
  • The opening of the War Memorial practice facility in Fort Lauderdale.
  • Record season-ticket demand and growing fan engagement.

Hosting of the franchise’s first-ever NHL outdoor game.

Despite the move, Caldwell admitted the decision was “bittersweet.” Panthers owner Vincent Viola echoed the sentiment, praising his contributions:

“Matt’s impact on our organization has been immeasurable. While it’s bittersweet, this is an exceptional opportunity for him with Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore.”

Why the NBA?

For Caldwell, the switch to the NBA represents a chance to take his leadership to the global stage.
“I love the NHL,” he said. “But the NBA is a much bigger, global platform. Marc and Alex have a vision to make Minnesota best in class, and I believe in that.”

What This Means for the Timberwolves and Lynx

Caldwell’s appointment signals a new era for both franchises. With his proven ability to transform sports organizations, fans in Minnesota can expect innovative growth, elevated fan experiences, and a stronger global presence for both the NBA’s Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Lynx.
