On the opening night of the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League, USMNT star Timothy Weah made headlines by scoring his first goal for Marseille in a high-profile clash with Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Facing the 14-time European champions away from home looked a daunting task for Marseille, but the French side showed no fear early on. Their breakthrough came when Mason Greenwood won possession near midfield and charged forward. Spotting Weah’s clever overlapping run, Greenwood slipped him through on goal. The American forward wasted no time, smashing a clinical strike past Thibaut Courtois to give Marseille a shock lead.

The goal carried special significance: 31 years after his father, George Weah, scored against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu, Timothy etched his own name into history at the same venue.

For the 25-year-old, it was his second career Champions League goal. He previously scored for Juventus against PSV Eindhoven during the 2024–25 campaign. Before that, he endured a goalless run in five Champions League appearances with Lille.

Weah’s opener also marked his first goal in just his fifth game for Marseille, where he is on loan under manager Roberto De Zerbi. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, this strike could be a major confidence boost as he looks to cement his role for both club and country.

Unfortunately for Marseille, Weah’s milestone wasn’t enough to secure a result. Kylian Mbappé converted two penalties, moving up to joint-sixth on the all-time Champions League scorers’ list, and led Real Madrid to a 2–1 comeback victory.
