Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as the frontrunners to sign RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons, moving ahead of rivals Chelsea in what could be one of the biggest transfer hijacks of the summer.

The 22-year-old Dutch international has been granted permission by Leipzig to travel to London and discuss a potential move, with Spurs now in advanced talks over a deal worth close to €70 million (£60m) – a fee that matches the Bundesliga side’s valuation.

Chelsea were previously seen as favourites to land Simons, but Tottenham’s official bid has shifted momentum firmly in their favour.

Negotiations are progressing quickly, and there is a growing belief that Simons could be left out of Leipzig’s squad against Heidenheim this weekend to finalise the move.

Spurs have been actively chasing a creative No.10 throughout the summer after failed attempts to sign Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze. While alternatives such as Nico Paz and Morgan Rogers were considered, neither were deemed realistic options this window.

Xavi Simons’ versatility and attacking flair make him a perfect fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system, and his signing would be a huge statement ahead of the new Premier League season.

Tottenham are also targeting an additional winger before the transfer window closes, with Thomas Frank eager to strengthen the squad further – particularly in defence following Luka Vuskovic’s loan move to Hamburg.

If Spurs complete the deal, it would not only bolster their attacking options but also represent a major victory over London rivals Chelsea in the transfer market.
