Arsenal’s new striker Viktor Gyokeres has shown his respect for Sporting Lisbon despite a dramatic summer exit that saw him fined for refusing to return to pre-season training.
The Swedish international was handed a hefty £306,000 fine by Sporting after refusing to train or play in order to accelerate his dream move to the Premier League. Eventually, the 26-year-old sealed a £63.5 million transfer to Arsenal, ending an unforgettable spell in Portugal.
Despite the controversy surrounding his departure, Gyokeres has now expressed gratitude to Sporting after being named Primeira Liga Player of the Year for the 2024/25 season.
Gyokeres’ Message to Sporting
In a heartfelt message, Gyokeres said:
“I am really honoured to receive this amazing award. Unfortunately, I cannot be there in person to receive it, but I would like to thank the players, the staff, everyone at the club and the Sporting fans who made this possible with their support during the season. It was an unforgettable season, we won both the Primeira Liga and the cup. Thank you all, and congratulations to the other nominees and winners. Thank you to those who voted for me. I love you all.”
Record-Breaking Numbers at Sporting
Gyokeres leaves Sporting as one of their most prolific modern forwards:
- 102 appearances
- 97 goals scored
- 54 goals in 52 games last season
His incredible goal-scoring form powered Sporting to a domestic double, cementing his legacy before heading back to England.
Arsenal’s New Star
Now at Arsenal, Gyokeres will look to replicate his Sporting success in the Premier League. The Gunners believe his finishing ability and physical presence can be the missing piece in their hunt for silverware under Mikel Arteta.
