Warriors Reportedly Eye Reunion With Gary Payton II in NBA Free Agency - Loadedmore.ng

With the 2025-26 NBA regular season just two months away, the Golden State Warriors are still evaluating key roster decisions — including the future of forward Jonathan Kuminga. Alongside those internal discussions, the team is also reportedly exploring the addition of veteran talent to strengthen their rotation.

Warriors Linked to Gary Payton II in Free Agency

According to a report by NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Warriors could be in line for a familiar reunion — this time with defensive specialist Gary Payton II, the son of Hall of Famer Gary Payton, also known as “The Glove.”

Should Payton II return, it would mark his third stint with the Warriors, following a two-year stretch from 2023 to 2025. Of course, fans will remember his instrumental role during Golden State’s 2022 championship run, where his perimeter defense helped the Warriors secure a 4-2 Finals victory over the Boston Celtics.

Defensive Impact and Recent Performance

Payton II has long been known for his lockdown defense — a trait he shares with his legendary father. A standout defender in the Pac-12 during his college days at Oregon State, he also claimed the NBA G League Defensive Player of the Year award in 2021 while playing for the Raptors 905.

During the 2024-25 NBA season, Payton suited up for 62 games, earning 11 starts. He averaged 6.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game, continuing to serve as a high-energy presence off the bench.

What a Reunion Would Mean for the Warriors

A potential reunion with Gary Payton II would provide the Warriors with an elite on-ball defender and a trusted veteran presence, particularly on a roster that is shifting toward younger talent. His familiarity with the system and proven ability to thrive in Steve Kerr’s defensive schemes make him an ideal fit as Golden State eyes another deep playoff run.
